Flashback Songs

Those songs that you hear that instantly throw you back to another time and place in your life.

Christmas 1989. Europe backpacking tour. Paris hostel. Hammering down the drinks with an assortment of beautiful Aussies, Poms, Canucks, and Scots. Some form of European MTV on in the background. Suddenly every one of them (re: guys) stops to stare at the screen. A incredibly beautiful woman is singing an incredibly beautiful song that I have never heard. Even I stop dead in my tracks. Who is this band? Why don't I know them?

"Texas," one of the Aussies groaned, "and that is Sharleen Spiteri. And she's got it ALL !" Indeed.

For the rest of our time in Paris, "She's got it ALL!" was one of our (many) catch phrases. I still say it now, but of course nobody knows what I am talking about.

Enjoy. Cause seriously, she's got it ALL!

And Sharleen is still a doll, twenty years on.

Don't worry, I have to explain my catch phrases all of the time. Most of them are from the Manson trial.

Oh my God! I loved loved loved Texas. This was one of those albums I listened to compulsively.

(And we missed each other's hostels experiences by just one year! I stayed at the FIAP in Paris, across the street from the famous Sainte Anne Psychiatric hospital. This is called... literary forshadowing. )

I love you!
Monkey's Human

(Monkey is in a coma this evening after being played with by 8 enthusiastic 8 year old boys and eating too much cake.)

Perfect. (Bangs are everything. People need to understand that. I don't care how big your tits are. If your eyes are hiding behind your hair, I'm in.)

Wow, I'm a native Texas and I've never hear of them. Then again, never traveled Europe either... the OBVIOUS place for a band called 'texas'. hmmm

Funny, that's how I always describe you (She's got it all).

And what the hell is a Pom?

Sysm - I knew if anyone would know this band, it would be you. As for Whitney, you really dodged a bullet there.

Poo - hello stranger! Go to YouTube and see more. They are fabulous. Best albums are Southside and Rick's Road.

Monkey's Human - remember my Fractured Fairy Tale post - about how my brothers used to say I was adopted? I think I was kidnapped from your family and adopted by mine. We missed each other in Oz by a year, and Europe by a year. And I too listened to this CD compulsively. This is all positively freakish.
Give my love to Monkey. Rub his belly and play Southside for him.

Bill - does she not have the best hair ever! And it's not like she has to cover that face with it either.

FH - they are actually from Scotland. Apparently they named themselves after the movie Paris, Texas. If that makes sense...

Flounder - a Pom (or Pommy) is what Australians call the English.I've always been told that it stands for Prisoner of Mother England. It's not considered a nice thing to call them - but it's just the Aussie way to nickname everyone. They call us Yanks.

Very CW-sounding. Never heard of 'em either. She's got a mouth to die for, though.

I had SUCH a huge crush on her! Like every other guy I knew.

Ms Spiteri's parents were obviously fans of Neighbours. How else could a poor Scotch girl end up with an Aussie name like Sharleen.

She is the female Robert Smith.

I'm just like you, songs, music take me right back to a place and time with a clarity of memory that non-music related memories rarely compare with.

Wow ... she is definitely a hottie. Of course, she has probably never accidentally flashed complete strangers, so you have definitely got that on her!!

Okay. We are totally soulmates. You are 41. Me too. You are a virgo. OMG...me too! You live in Florida? Me too! And our avatars? Totally drawn by the same people! You remember the 80's! Whoa! This song used to get played in the underground new wave clubs in NYC! She was called the female Michael Hutchence (from INXS)

Marry me? We both so totally have it all!

CP.

Hmmmm I hate to say I have never even heard this song before. I guess any time I hear it from now on, I will say, hey, this song always takes me back to that time I was on Brookelina's blog....

I just stripped off all my clothes and danced around the house. Later I realized all my shades were open.

I was living in the UK at that time. I remember. :)

Though I didn't realize Texas wasn't also known in the US. Weren't they?
